On Wednesday, May 18, 2011 the 19 for Life board of directors, represented by Oggie Lilly and Dave and Tracie Frandsen, awarded two local high school senior athletes each with a $2,000 scholarship in recognition of their strength in overcoming adversity.

One scholarship was given to Matt Blea, a senior at San Jose High School who suffered a life-threatening concussion at the 2009 Thanksgiving Day “Big Bone” football game between San Jose and Lincoln High.  Matt was in the hospital for over a month after needing emergency brain surgery due to the game injury.  He has had a remarkable recovery and is looking forward to moving onto college in the fall.

Another scholarship was gifted to Richie Martinez, a baseball player at Live Oak High School.   Last year, Richie started experiencing extreme pain while playing varsity football. Doctors discovered had a cyst the size of a lemon in his brain. Richie underwent brain surgery, and after a couple months of recuperation he was able to return to school and even play baseball.  He is looking forward to continuing to play baseball in Junior College this fall.
